Blood Tests: What They Tell You, What They Don’t
And Why Most Women Are Left Confused
If you have ever had a blood test [I am sure you have had plenty like I have!], you will know the routine. Your doctor tells you you need a blood test. You are then sent off to the clinic. A vial [or several, as in my case] of blood is taken [not great when you are already anaemic], and then you wait. A week or two later, you get back your results... “Everything looks normal.” Sigh!
What does that even mean?
For most women, their blood test feels like a dead end. You know something does not feel right; you’re tired most of the time, get uncomfortably bloated just looking at food, and your moods make you so cranky, everyone is afraid to speak to you. Your blood test has left you none the wiser. Yes, ok, you might get a couple of numbers flagged as “high” or “low,” but the explanation why is often lacking. If you do get an explanation, its usually your hormones are a little off or you are slightly [perhaps severely] anaemic, but that is about it.
Why Blood Tests Matter (and Why They Frustrate Us)
Blood tests are considered the gold standard in modern medicine. They measure what is happening inside your body at a chemical and cellular level: red and white blood cells, vitamins, minerals, hormones, cholesterol, glucose, markers of inflammation, and so much more. Doctors rely on these numbers to decide what medication, surgery, or referral you may need.
But here is the problem:
Most tests only look at a handful of markers.
The “normal” ranges are based on population averages, not your unique body.
A “normal” reading doesn’t always mean optimal health, it just means you don’t meet the criteria for disease.
So while blood tests can be incredibly powerful, they can also be misleading if taken at face value. No wonder so many women feel confused and frustrated!
The Limitations No One Talks About
Let’s be real though… blood work can tell you a lot, but it doesn’t always tell the whole story.
Energy problems. Your iron might look fine on paper, but that doesn’t mean your body is actually using it properly.
Hormonal issues. Standard panels might skim over crucial markers, leaving gaps in your understanding.
Digestive struggles. You won’t get much insight into how your gut is breaking down and absorbing nutrients from a routine test [if at all].
This is why so many women are treated symptom by symptom, without getting to the actual root cause of their struggles.
A More Complete Picture
That’s where I do things differently. One of the wellness panels I run goes far beyond a standard blood test. It looks at 58 different markers, giving you a much more complete picture of what’s actually happening in your body.
This panel tells you the whole story of your health:
How well your body is using glucose (your energy fuel).
Whether there is hidden inflammation affecting your circulation.
How efficiently nutrients are transported around your body.
How well your immune system is fighting off bacterial, viral, or even parasitic infections.
How your digestion is working all the way from stomach to elimination (and whether gastric inflammation might be playing a role).
Risk factors for your heart health.
Detailed vitamin and mineral status: copper, magnesium, Vitamin D, B9, B12, the very nutrients that affect mood, energy, immunity, and digestion.
Circulating hormones linked to sexual function, stress, peri-menopause, and overall balance.
Instead of just saying, “Your results are fine,” this type of test actually helps us answer the questions you’ve been asking all along: Why do I feel this way? What’s the real cause? And more importantly...what can I do about it?
Why This Matters for Women’s Health
Too many women are dismissed with “normal” blood tests while living with symptoms that aren’t normal at all...chronic fatigue, bloating, brain fog, weight gain, low libido, poor sleep, and irregular cycles [just to name a few].
The difference between knowing your numbers and understanding what those numbers mean for your unique body is life-changing. When you finally see how all the pieces connect together, you can stop guessing and start making decisions that actually move the needle.
In other words: blood tests are powerful, but only when you run the right ones and know how to interpret them. Otherwise, you’re just collecting data without insight.
