How What We Eat Has Stopped us Listening to Ourselves
Why we no longer eat with intuition and how it's been stolen from us.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately, not just about food itself, but about the relationship we have with food… and how far we’ve strayed from what our body knows to be true.
There was a time, and I’m talking long before food pyramids and "trust the science" campaigns , when eating wasn’t about calories, macros, or influencer trends. I am talking about a time where food was all about connection, let’s call it a kind of silent dialogue between body and earth, but unfortunately, that conversation was severed...
And it was not by accident.
The Great Disconnection - How Modern Food Blocks Intuitive Flow
Let me get straight to the point. Much of the ‘so-called’ food we eat today isn’t actually food. It’s a symphony of chemicals, mostly from artificial man-made substances. You’ll find refined sugar, synthetic additives, preservatives, artificial colours, artificial flavours, and countless other industrial concoctions filling the shelves of your local supermarket. And while they’re great for boosting shelf life and profit margins, they shorten your vitality and cellular integrity
You are literally being fed substances that stimulate your nervous system but deplete your life force. Caffeine hijacks your energy. Refined salt strips your body of its natural hydration and slowly deadens your inner landscape. Over time, this overstimulation scrambles your body’s ability to regulate hunger, mood, and even your thoughts.
But it’s the impact these substances have on your intuition that is perhaps most disturbing.
Welcome to the Bliss Point
Here’s where it gets sinister.
In the food industry, there’s a term known as the “bliss point.” It refers to the precise combination of sugar, fat, and salt that creates maximum pleasure in the brain which bypasses our natural satiety cues and switches off the internal mechanisms that tell us when we’ve had enough.
This is not accidental.
Forget about making things taste good...the whole point is to create an addiction. These foods are chemically engineered to keep you coming back for more and more and more, even when your body is screaming “no more.” In fact, the louder your body protests, the more these foods are designed to override that protest. They flood your brain with dopamine and create a false sense of reward, one that has nothing to do with nourishment and everything to do with control.
You’re not eating because you’re hungry. You’re eating because the food has been designed to make you eat. You literally look at the food and it says “eat me”.
And the more you consume it, the more you want, regardless of whether you are full up or not. The lines between true hunger and emotional craving begin to blur, and eventually, you stop listening to your body altogether.
We’ve Outsourced Our Knowing
Somewhere along the way, perhaps you stopped listening to your bodies and started listening to “them.”
Them being the ‘experts’. All knowing data driven scientists, doctors and whoever the experts happen to be. You hop on the latest wellness trend, the latest "miracle" food or fat loss hack. It's almost like we’ve started treating food like an algorithm rather than something that nourishes and gives us energy.
What it boils down to is this…
You handed over your power to ‘experts’ and your stomach. Your inner guidance has been taken over, dimmed if you will, so hearing the quiet voice that says “What does my body need?” is no longer heard. Rather than ask yourself, “What does my body need to heal?”, instead you listen to what your doctors tell you.
There is an issue with that…
A lot of the people we’ve outsourced our knowing to… are themselves disconnected to their true knowing. Their advice is often based on skewed science, biased studies, or industry funding.
So yes, you can certainly follow their advice, but to what cost when you ignore your gut? Now, I’m not sure what you would call it but in my mind that is called miseducation.
How They Erased Our Ancestral Wisdom
So let me cut to the chase, because it's important we look beyond junk food and dietary fads. Walk with me...back in time. I am talking about the colonisation of lands, culture, and people - changed the game entirely.
So much of our ancestors ways was wiped out thanks to superstition and the belief that what people did back then was mumbo jumbo, so traditions were replaced...no forced, through genocide with Christianity and man-made science. Traditional foodways were replaced with the large-scale farming of specific crops. Spiritual relationships with food was dismissed as primitive and Rituals and Rites of Passage replaced by convenience and capitalism.
And here we are now… living in an edited history with edited food that changed our palates so much, we are literally eating ourselves into dis-ease and an early grave. So you could say, we didn’t just forget how to eat intuitively, it was trained out of us.
All this to ensure we NEVER step into who we truly are, because if and when that happens...it's game over for the power structure that keeps us in fear mode 24/7.
