The Damaging Report That Turned Medicine Into a Monopoly
When Science Became a Weapon Against Healing
Episode Summary
The Flexner Report of 1910 the turning point that reshaped Modern Medicine and practically erased Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) from mainstream practice. Commissioned by the Carnegie Foundation and written by Abraham Flexner, the report surveyed 155 medical schools and declared that most lacked scientific rigor, pushing for a model grounded in laboratory science, hospital training, and university affiliation.
Before the Flexner report, the medical landscape was a vibrant mix of homeopaths, eclectics, Thomsonians, and others competed with regular doctors, more often than not - with better outcomes during epidemics because they avoided the toxic treatments that the medical doctors would use. But Flexner’s standards favoured the emerging biomedical model, aligning with the American Medical Association (AMA) and pharmaceutical interests. Schools that couldn’t afford labs or didn’t fit the mould were shut down or forced to convert.
Unfortunately, homeopathic, frequency medicine, along with eclectic schools, once numerous and successful, vanished within two decades. CAM was labelled quackery, simply because it threatened the medical monopoly. Centuries of herbal, energetic, and holistic knowledge were sidelined, and the biomedical model became the only path to legitimacy, licensing, and funding.
Flexner’s reforms swept away effective, safer traditions and stifled diversity in healing. Today’s CAM resurgence is, in many ways, a corrective recognition that high-tech medicine excels in emergencies but often falls short in chronic care, prevention, and whole-person wellness.
