Over the last week, the UK jumped straight from winter into full summer, and the sudden heat flipped a switch in my body. Almost overnight, I started craving fruit and lots of it. Watermelon, grapes, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, coconut yogurt, and my favourite Nashi pear. It had nothing to do with getting my five a day either. My body was asking for hydration in a form that actually works for me.
I’ve always known that water alone doesn’t cut it for me. In traditional Chinese medicine, foods like lemons, limes, and watermelon are cooling, cleansing, and hydrating in a way plain water is not. These fruits help clear mucus, clean the blood, and move heat out of the body. And watermelon especially, digests quickly, quenches thirst, and builds fluids. I can eat 500 grams in one sitting and still want more because my body recognises it as structured water.
Fruit also keeps things moving. When you’re dealing with fibroids, constipation and stagnation can unbalance hormones, cause uncomfortable bloating and lead to pain. Hydrating foods with minerals, enzymes, and fibre help the bowels stay open, which lightens everything: energy, clarity, even menstrual symptoms. Dense carbs, salty snacks, caffeine, and dehydrating foods do the opposite. They clog, dry, and bloat, especially if you have a ‘damp’ constitution like I do.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has always helped me understand my body. I know I carry dampness, so certain foods, like nuts for example can make my damp disposition worse. Eating this way helps me clear heat, reduce damp, and keep stagnation from building. And at my age, in my mid‑50s, I’m intentional about staying functional, clear, and mobile. I want my body working efficiently, especially when the temperature hits 30 degrees or more.
But the bigger point is this: your body is intelligent. It tells you what it needs. Most of us are fighting our bodies instead of listening to it. Fibroids are the same, they’re a message. They are a bit like Groundhog Day. They will keep growing back until you face what you’ve been avoiding. You body is trying to get you to take note. Personally, I wasn’t living my truth for years. I was conditioned, programmed, doing the same things every day until I faced some uncomfortable truths.
So yes, I started initially by sharing my what I was having for breakfast. But when you zoom out and look at the bigger picture, my intake of fruit was about me listening to my body, responding to it, and letting it guide me back to how I was designed to live. Its the same for you too.
